Dear Hannah: LEarning (Hang In There (See It Through, See Through It))

Dear Hannah,

we can both reach
the finish line

by helping each other
train and pace
to run our own race

but to run it right
we need to both pack light

to push some major freight
and pull our own weight

so hang in there when it
doesn't go your way

hang in there when you have
to say "bye bye" sometimes

to people, places, habits,
and ideas that hinder
more than they help

sometimes you have to
see it through

... and sometimes you have
to see through it ...

Love,

Daddy

"LEarning (Hang In There (See It Through, See Through It))"
By Derrick Brown
12-8-2017

my man ...

we can both reach
the finish line

by helping each other
train and pace
to run our own race

but to run it right
we need to both pack light

to push some major freight
and pull our own weight

so hang in there when it
doesn't go your way

hang in there when you have
to say "bye bye" sometimes

to people, places, habits,
and ideas that hinder
more than they help

sometimes you have to
see it through

... and sometimes you have
to see through it ...

hear me now ...

---

(VERSE 1 - Leadership WETLL)

my will is strong
I kinda don't belong

won't sing no sad song
'bout how they do me wrong

the road is long
ambition misleads

and pride - it precedes
this often proceeds

to some misreads
and some misdeeds

and some false creeds
and some false feeds

and some tall weeds
that choke some good seeds

8

start some nosebleeds
and some stampedes

which only succeeds
in culture that breeds

'excessive speeds
"okey doke" impedes

while the real needs
never get the heeds

wise man concedes
ain't no "guaranteeds"_

tough choices - yes, indeeds
duty that exceeds

sometimes he rereads
(reconsiders)
sometimes he proofreads
(scrutinizes)

sometimes he intercedes
(intervenes on one's behalf)
sometimes he supersedes
(takes over)

sometimes he recedes
(falls back)
sometimes he secedes
(leaves)

... and says "goodbye"

(CHORUS)

... but hang in there

(VERSE 2 - Building Partnership Synergy WETLL)

maybe we keep our eyes
on the wrong prize

it's hard to realize
masterful disguise

ancestor cries
still we rise

even tho the m.o.
oversimplifies

"woe is me" sighs
delays and denies

chit-chat that I despise
schemes, compromise_

group_think, soul ties
delusion - big lies

confusion - supersize
pies in the skies

8

here come the good guys
secret agent spies

your true allies
"surprise! surprise!"

build what you devise
investigate the "whys"

know_what_they_com-prise
'test and then revise

improve then reprise_
LEarn then apprise

advise and strategize
incorporate replies

shop the best buys
stock up the supplies

knowledge that applies
is healthy, wealthy, wise

(CHORUS)

... hang in there, bo - they comin'

(VERSE 3 - Marketing & Outreach WETLL)

trying to connect
ideas and intellect

with folks who can respect
can deflate and deject

your work will self-select_
those_who_will come correct

divide and then dissect
your cause and its effect

yea_it's_far_from perfect
but you're an architect

adjust and redirect
align and intersect

with groups who recollect_
dialogue and retrospect

consider and inspect
each_angle_n_aspect

8

take it to the stage
use the crowd to gauge

approaches that engage
cats of a different age

on the same page
but with a different flow

OK - if that's the case
give 'em a different show

they'll tell you when to "go"
they'll tell you when to "whoa"

friends - not your foe
their insight helps you grow

go and get your dough
reap all you sow

'prosper_even_though
own and never owe

(CHORUS)

... hang on in there

(VERSE 4 - Opportunity, Preparation, and Creativity WETLL)

ever ready
ever steady

don't know who or when
but I'm prepared to win

let me tell you though
the price of my thorough

sometimes a status quo
losses help me grow

but they hurt me yo
hard to let it go_

sorrow can lay you low
sap all of yo gusto

I make it work for me
'cause losing twice can be

victory recipe
once I take time to see

8

all ideas are great
ideas regenerate_

destined for greater fate
some others have to wait

my ace up in the hole
is my creative soul

and my creative space
and creative control

'cause when I'm in the lab
production is the goal

nothing is discarded
just assigned a role

one track might help me rock
another helps me roll

another breaks me down
another makes me whole

(CHORUS)

... but they all help me
hang in there

(EPILOGUE)

I have travelled a long road,
and have miles to go before I sleep.

My creative process is fueled by
wisdom, positive vibes and encouragement ...
but also by responding to adversity.

I shared my process today ...

It's no secret that my greatest
struggles and triumphs
emanate from the same focuses ...

Leadership
Building Partnership Synergies
Marketing and Outreach
Identifying and Responding to Opportunities

I believe that I win more
than I lose, and I believe
that I will reap well if I
faint not.

So I hang in there.

I see it through.

... and, I am learning how
to see through it - because
sometimes it is necessary.

I hope that makes sense.

Selah.

About Derrick Brown (Standup Storyteller)

I am Keisha's husband, and Hannah's father.

I am a “standup storyteller.”

I fuse rap, spoken word (poetry), oration (traditional public speaking), singing, and teaching into messages of hope, healing, and change that I write, direct, and produce to help people who help people.

Everything must change - and stay changED.

Tradition begins and ends with change.

Change begins with me and the renewing of my mind ... then continues through efforts to effect small-group discipleship (equipping others to equip others) with audiences that respect and embrace mentoring, mediation, and problem solving as tools of change.

I am the product of my mentoring relationships, peacemaking (and peacekeeping), and problem-solving ability.

My education began when I finished school.

After school, I enrolled in a lifelong curriculum that includes classes in ministry, entrepreneurship, stewardship, literacy, numeracy, language, self-identity, self-expression, and analysis / synthesis.

My projects execute a ministry that has evolved from wisdom earned through lessons learned.

I want to share this wisdom to build teams of "triple threat" fellows - mentors, mediators, and problem solvers.

We will collaborate in simple, powerful ways that allow us to help people who help people.

I now know that power is work done efficiently (with wise and skillful use of resources, interests, communication, and expertise).

Dear Hannah: LEarning (Marketing 2 Point 0)

Dear Hannah,

My name is Derrick.

I have one purpose today.

I want to tell people who I am, and what I do, hope, and dream about ...

I am a standup storyteller.

I use spoken word (poetry), rapping, teaching, oration, singing,  writing, producing, and directing to cast hopeful visions of creative, robust solutions to the problems of our existing state.

Let's say that another way.

I want to challenge and change long-standing traditions.

Tradition begins and ends with change.

Everything must change - and STAY changED.

Change begins with me and the renewing of my mind.

It continues through my efforts to disciple – that is, to equip others to equip others.

I renew my mind through conversations - in classrooms, churches, conferences, city council meetings, concert halls, chat rooms, and cyphers.

I am on a journey that will lead me to facilitate a kind of conversation that is inspired by my renewal experiences ...

... one that puts all these conversation venues on the same menu - feel me?

Let me share my journey's progress over the last year ...

Love,

Daddy

Dear Hannah: LEarning (The Messenger (Speak Your Peace))

Dear Hannah,

We are all messengers for different audiences.

Sometimes your message will not find its audience ...

... until you learn how to speak your peace.

Say what you have to say ...

... but tell your truth with grace.

"LEarning (Messenger (Speak Your Peace))"
By Derrick Brown
11-9-2017
[begin intro]

we are all messengers
for different audiences.

sometimes your message
will not find its audience

until you learn how
to speak your peace ...

i'm sayin' ... say
what you have to say

but tell your
truth with grace

... listen ...

[VERSE 1]

got a hair trigger
i ain't hard to figure

ready to deliver
verbal judo shiver

but my voice is
one of my choices

issa thin line
I think I de-fine

as "gotta share, but ..."
"can't make nobody care ..."

no viral headlines
video_rewinds

reposted_reminds
controlling_designs

'yet and still it's true
world is waiting 2

what u gon do boo boo?
do what u gotta do

exit the phone booth
go head and tell your truth

do your super sleuth
with a l'il couth

some will hear with fear
and may not understand

some will tune you out
"ain't tryin 2 hear this, man"

some will blow you off
call you a crazy man

they cannot see you
indivisible man

some will hear the call
then wanna hear the plan

now to those folks ...

[Chorus / Hook]
... you are The Messenger
... now tell 'em ...

[VERSE 2]

that the race ain't won
till the race is run

by my daughter's son
each generation

gotta lose the blame
get past the shame

ignore the fame
ignore acclaim

respect your name
avoid the lame

improve your aim
ignite your flame

build your frame
work your game

stake your claim
expect the same

from minds that meet
move their feet

hit the street
remove the sheet

separate
chaff from wheat

ideas concrete
plans discreet

then compete
rinse and repeat

snow or sleet
rain or heat

conquer conceit
conquer defeat

don't win - don't cheat
don't work - don't eat

[Chorus / Hook]
... that message was
for the home team

... now we gotta take
this show on the road ...

[VERSE 3]

(beat changes ...)

In the last year, I have ventured
beyond my comfort zone - and have
been reintroduced to myself ...

I have harnessed and cultivated
talents that I have always had,
and have learned to use them in
new, creative, powerful ways.

Lots of folks know little about
my hopes and dreams, or my REAL
talents.

I often feel trapped in the
temple of their familiar.

They see me how they see me ...
and how they see me ain't none
of my business.

So my next message has to
reintroduce myself to each
who has ears to hear ...
and call us to greater levels
of relationship, LEarning,
thinking, leadership,
and direct, strategic
action ...

... then I'll tell 'em ...

[VERSE 4]

(back to original beat ...)

freedom of speech
means come correct

be quick to listen
and respect

cast your vote
but then elect

a manner that
is circumspect

know your foe
self-protect

communicate
outside your sect

crack the code
then detect

investigate
and inspect

redeem the time
then collect

initiate
then select

participate
and interject

ideas produced
from intellect

analyses
that dissect

consider cause
and effect

influence
and affect

grow, consider
and reflect

'cause The Messenger
has to listen to LEarn.

[PROLOGUE]

I'm on a mission
to pursue change
through wisdom earned
from lessons learned ...

... and through relationships
built by tough conversations
where my job is both
to share my truth
and my peace ...

... to help me learn
how to get
out of my own way ...

... then get better
at helping somebody
to help somebody.

This journey has taught me
that these conversations
will accomplish nothing
if they don't change me

... by moving me to greater
depths of
acceptance
and affirmation ...

... and greater heights of
accountability
and authority.
