Dear Hannah: LEarning (KnowledgeBase's "Reach - Then Teach" Educational Materials)

This Month's Featured Categories:
Albums / Mixtapes (To Support Long-Term Critical Thinking & Creative Writing Projects)
Project Bundles (With Video Guides)

May I Pay Via Purchase Order? Yes - Here's How!

About KnowledgeBase's "Reach - Then Teach" Store

Since our daughter Hannah’s birth (in 2013), I have published a catalog of
music and learning content that we sell online

Yes - you can pay via purchase order - here is how!

Our catalog offers "on-demand" downloadable classes (short, introductory video guides bundled with accompanying digital document resources) designed as flexible, multi-use supplemental educational materials.

Our content supports nurturing small-group fellowship, relationship building, and character education via informal social & emotional learning (SEL).

For example, last year we wrote and produced a "curriculum album" called
"changED" - an original video collection of 10 songs (MP4 format with on-screen lyrics) dedicated to Hannah that encourage social change through direct action.

This year, we released "Follow The Leader (changED - Volume 2)" - a collection of 10 NEW songs.

The on-screen lyrics help students engage each song's messages - which make each song a "textbook".

We bundled the 10 videos with a PDF lyrics booklet.

A teacher (or motivated student) with this bundle can then inspire, inform, and engage other students via traditional (and non-traditional) individual and / or team critical thinking and creative writing projects.

These projects include (but are not limited to) “standup storytelling”, debates, essays, public speaking, poetry & songwriting (and performance), field trips, short videos (like public service announcements), and letter writing campaigns.

These projects help students to weigh and consider current events through the tools of empathy, analysis, synthesis, mentoring, mediation, and problem solving.

Our goal is to help them to become engaged and invested in the process of change - by finding and using their "voice" and gifts.

About Derrick Brown (Standup Storyteller)

I am Keisha's husband, and Hannah's father.

I am a “standup storyteller.”

I fuse rap, spoken word (poetry), oration (traditional public speaking), singing, and teaching into messages of hope, healing, and change that I write, direct, and produce to help people who help people.

Everything must change - and stay changED.

Tradition begins and ends with change.

Change begins with me and the renewing of my mind ... then continues through efforts to effect small-group discipleship (equipping others to equip others) with audiences that respect and embrace mentoring, mediation, and problem solving as tools of change.

I am the product of my mentoring relationships, peacemaking (and peacekeeping), and problem-solving ability.

My education began when I finished school.

After school, I enrolled in a lifelong curriculum that includes classes in ministry, entrepreneurship, stewardship, literacy, numeracy, language, self-identity, self-expression, and analysis / synthesis.

My projects execute a ministry that has evolved from wisdom earned through lessons learned.

I want to share this wisdom to build teams of "triple threat" fellows - mentors, mediators, and problem solvers.

We will collaborate in simple, powerful ways that allow us to help people who help people.

I now know that power is work done efficiently (with wise and skillful use of resources, interests, communication, and expertise).

Dear Hannah: LEarning (Marketing 2 Point 0)

Dear Hannah,

My name is Derrick.

I have one purpose today.

I want to tell people who I am, and what I do, hope, and dream about ...

I am a standup storyteller.

I use spoken word (poetry), rapping, teaching, oration, singing,  writing, producing, and directing to cast hopeful visions of creative, robust solutions to the problems of our existing state.

Let's say that another way.

I want to challenge and change long-standing traditions.

Tradition begins and ends with change.

Everything must change - and STAY changED.

Change begins with me and the renewing of my mind.

It continues through my efforts to disciple – that is, to equip others to equip others.

I renew my mind through conversations - in classrooms, churches, conferences, city council meetings, concert halls, chat rooms, and cyphers.

I am on a journey that will lead me to facilitate a kind of conversation that is inspired by my renewal experiences ...

... one that puts all these conversation venues on the same menu - feel me?

Let me share my journey's progress over the last year ...

Love,

Daddy

###

The Rest Of The Story ...

For years, I have repaired, recycled, and redistributed broken / obsolete laptop & desktop computers.

I used to do this as a summer camp and after-school program.

I financed the program through corporate sponsorships and resale of the repaired computers - or the working parts harvested from the dead ones.

I am now using this approach to engage and organize Marietta City School families.

I have limited time and space now, so sourcing and storing laptops is more of a challenge.

So, I started thinking about how to adjust.

Since the beginning of the year, I have had my memory jogged several times about how floppy disks were like Swiss army knives in the "old days" of computers (before CDs, DVDs, USBs and flash drives).

You installed software with them.

You backed up your computer with them.

You could use them to start and clean your computer if it had a virus (or some other issue).

If you had a Sony Mavica digital camera, you stored your pictures on them.

If you had a MIDI keyboard, or an Akai music production center (MPC), you stored music patterns on them.

If you are a court reporter (stenographer), your recording machine uses them.

If you embroider, your machine uses them.

They also pack and stack well, taking up very little space.

When diskette drives were removed from computers, I threw all of my floppies away - except for one that I called "MacGyver."

A buddy called yesterday with a dilemma.

He designs and builds custom car stereo speaker cabinets using an old computer program written for him in the 1980s.

It was installed on his computer for him by the program's author in 1986, and he was given no installation diskettes.

His computer only has a diskette drive, and he now needs to move the design program to another computer.

"MacGyver" is the only tool I have that can help him - but it is the only tool I need.

This experience was my epiphany.

We can make "MacGyver" disks and several other obscure, specialized tools using those old floppy diskettes ... if we can source them!

Hence the request ...

About KnowledgeBase's "Reach - Then Teach" Leadership Cohort

KnowledgeBase’s "Reach - Then Teach" Leadership Cohort is a diverse group of 12 professionals who build relationships, increase capacity, and generate solutions by executing mentoring, conflict resolution, and problem solving projects.

We help people to help people.

Recent Projects

1.   Produced a one-hour documentary of our daughter Hannah’s third year.
2.   Produced and debuted ...

a.   changED - 14 "standup storytelling" songs that use mentoring, mediation, and problem solving to inspire LEarning, solutions, and change - change that starts within.

b.   CONVERSE - a difficult (moderated) conversation that takes place between two rational humans with differing perspectives. The underlying principle is that civil discourse - especially between dissenters - promotes growth.

c.    The NOW YOU KNOW History Quiz Bowl - a one-hour "Jeopardy"-styled gameshow with episodes that share the stories of 26 ordinary people who accomplished extraordinary feats.

d.   BAG OF LIFE - a small-group relationship building activity that uses randomly drawn cards containing fill-in-the-blank sentences, questions, and words that encourage transparent self-expression.

e.   HABIT – a small-group relationship building curriculum that uses BAG OF LIFE to disciple groups of men.

f.   Talk To Me - a one-hour "Taboo"-styled gameshow that teaches the language of character, math, and other subjects.

3.   Published Writing Your First Business Plan - a seven-assignment writing project that helps aspiring entrepreneurs understand their vision, and the missions that will manifest it.
4.   Used eBay to develop a catalog of proprietary search algorithms to identify, purchase, and resell items on eBay, Amazon, and TeachersPayTeachers.
5.   Helped a local community group map community resources like homeowner associations, “VIPs”, schools, and churches to win school board elections.
6.   Redesigned a public school’s information technology (IT) support infrastructure to save them time and money.
7.   Helped a Georgia online school account for 2000+ laptops purchased through federal grants that were distributed statewide to its faculty, staff, and students.
8.   Helped a local math teacher pass the GACE Math Certification Exam (022, 023) on his first attempt.

KnowledgeBase Principal Consultant Derrick Brown (a publisher, filmmaker, executive coach & registered mediator with engineering degrees from Clemson and Georgia Tech) leads the cohort.

“Our previous 2 cohorts have teamed high school & college students with experienced professionals in creative, unconventional ways,” said Brown.

“For example, each member is a mentor and mentee – depending on our project. When we helped a local school keep iPhones off the school’s network, our younger members led that effort.”

“The older members led when we supported a homeowner association’s outreach effort by mapping its surrounding communities online.”

“Members are pleasantly surprised to learn that they are paid for their solutions. My mission is to coach each cohort to victory in ways that help our project partners reach their goals.”

“I love to engage innovators who like to solve problems and help people. I am the product of mentoring relationships, peacemaking, and problem solving. I am simply teaching what I have been taught, while continuing to learn from my students.”

In addition to the external projects, Brown also teaches and trains members by conducting workshops on diverse topics like creative problem solving, data analysis & visualization, conflict resolution, game design, and filmmaking.

“These workshops develop and sharpen our mental, physical, and strategic tools. This teaching, coupled with nurturing and guidance, produces personal growth and great fruit. The fruit is then used to feed and replant.”
