The BIG Picture: Common (Core) Sense

This was posted on my Facebook wall recently ...

My response ...

Hey !

I would solve the problem by recognizing that there are several problems here ...

1. 427 - 111 is easily done using the "old" way (using place value), and by checking your work (by adding the two numbers at the "bottom" to see if you get the number at the top).

This math problem is not the key problem.

2. Common Core Standards simply state what should be learned - not the methods by which knowledge should be obtained.

When this full-fledged revolt against the new standards started, I went and read them (http://www.corestandards.org/Math/).

My conclusion - while Common Core is more stringent than previous standards, they are still just standards that establish milestones - not pathways.

3. As a person of faith, imagine how society reacted when Moses brought the ten commandments down to the people.

There was probably a lot of complaining, murmuring, and even some slick, aggressive campaigns bent on tearing down God's standards - by using misinformation that preys on our fear of coming up short, or having to subject our will in ways we do not like.

God gave us standards, but also gave us the free will to accept and meet those standards through our own decisions and actions - or to try to find a justifiable shortcut.

Do not be deceived - people who think with their eyes (and ears and fears) are easily fooled.

Take Care,

Derrick
