About Derrick Brown (Standup Storyteller)

I am Keisha's husband, and Hannah's father.

I am a “standup storyteller.”

I fuse rap, spoken word (poetry), oration (traditional public speaking), singing, and teaching into messages of hope, healing, and change that I write, direct, and produce to help people who help people.

Everything must change - and stay changED.

Tradition begins and ends with change.

Change begins with me and the renewing of my mind ... then continues through efforts to effect small-group discipleship (equipping others to equip others) with audiences that respect and embrace mentoring, mediation, and problem solving as tools of change.

I am the product of my mentoring relationships, peacemaking (and peacekeeping), and problem-solving ability.

My education began when I finished school.

After school, I enrolled in a lifelong curriculum that includes classes in ministry, entrepreneurship, stewardship, literacy, numeracy, language, self-identity, self-expression, and analysis / synthesis.

My projects execute a ministry that has evolved from wisdom earned through lessons learned.

I want to share this wisdom to build teams of "triple threat" fellows - mentors, mediators, and problem solvers.

We will collaborate in simple, powerful ways that allow us to help people who help people.

I now know that power is work done efficiently (with wise and skillful use of resources, interests, communication, and expertise).

Dear Hannah: LEarning (Reflections (and Corrections))

Dear Hannah,

every now and then
i look back

i'm checking for my shadow
and the direction of my reflection

so i can see where i'm headed
and get out of my own way

[Verse 1] eyes wide shut (dodge and destroy obstacles)

people_make_the_world_go_'round
they_make_your_eyes_roll_too

love 'em with passion'
teach 'em how to treat me, too

in the end tho it all
makes patience greater, too

but when you're goin' thru
[SIGH] when you're goin' thru

4

[Shhhh!] we not gon go there, boo
not gon' go there, boo

here's what i say to you
hollar if ya hear me, too

ease on down the road
avoid them potholes, too

two hands on the wheel
keep on drivin thru

8

let the animals cross
let the storms pass thru

let grace adjust ya pace
let peace be witcha too

keep the tank full
gas up when u need to

pack ya bags light
no room for "you-know-who"

12

so peace to "Perfect Patti"
"Lazy Susan", too

"Word Salad Willie", "Crazy Daisy",
and the whole crew

manipulators, calculators
peace be unto u

opinionators, aggravators
i can't hear u

[CHORUS]

every now and then
i remember when ... in myyyy life

reflections

[Verse 2] every word might be the last ...

might be the last thing
i ever say to you

i love you
no matter what you do

i pray that u see
the gifts i see in u

i hope u bless the world
with hope and healing too

4

protect ya heart and mind
make sure u feed 'em too

be easy with your words
kill 'em with kindness too

make small mistakes
avoid them big ones, boo

call your own fouls
that's what the grownups do

8

keep your name clean
streets is watchin' u

give peace a chance
keep it or make it, boo

put your foot down
put your foot up, too

then keep right on walkin'
that's what feet really do

12

embrace ya loved ones
that embrace you too

don't fake the funk
drama don't become you

blood is thick
friendship's a thicker glue

but here's a quicker clue
forgive and start anew

[CHORUS]

every now and then
i remember when ... in myyyy life
