Dear Hannah: LEarning (Now You Know History Quiz Bowl (NYK HQB))

Dear Hannah,

The NOW YOU KNOW History Quiz Bowl is a gameshow that tells the story of 25 ordinary people who did extraordinary things.

This game is a walk through history, and the embracing of what our world calls diversity, sensitivity, and inclusion.

Writing the game helps me LEarn about and practice all three - at the same time.

It is my hope that playing the game helps us to all do the same.

Love,

Daddy

The NOW YOU KNOW History Quiz Bowl is a gameshow tells the story of 25 ordinary people who did extraordinary things.

These people have special connections to each other - and to us.

Our connections to their lives, stories and accomplishments help us to relate to them.

This allows them to disciple us - even though we may never meet them face-to-face.

The game is played in the tradition of "Jeopardy" - with a few stylistic departures.

First, I serve as host.

My role is to be the griot.

Each gameboard selection affords me the chance to introduce a person and tell their story - in 15-20 seconds.

Each story ends with a common knowledge "answer" that contestants then "question" for points.

Our second key departure - if contestants do not phrase their question properly, we chew the meat, spit out the bones, and keep LEarning.

Questions, answers, and phrasing are all of secondary importance.

The story and LEarning are our priorities.

Roll the demo ...

Each of these stories used to appear as posters on the walls of my office when I was a school administrator.

They were great conversation pieces, and inspirations to all who engaged them - especially me.

Please note that I call this a History Quiz Bowl.

That is very intentional, and I fully embrace the irony there.

Human nature and conventional wisdom suggest that once the stories of two Black people are shared (within 5 minutes), then this becomes a "Black History" Quiz Bowl.

Au contraire, mon frere et ma chere.

This game is a walk through history, and the embracing of what our world calls diversity, sensitivity, and inclusion.

Writing the game helps me LEarn about and practice all three - at the same time.

It is my hope that playing the game helps us to all do the same.

Selah.

Dear Hannah: LEarning (Writing Your First Business Plan (WYFBP))

Dear Hannah,

Vision, Mission, and Steps provide a path that helps you to walk in your life's purpose.

Vision describes what your efforts will produce / create - it describes your "end".

Mission describes the concrete path to your vision - it describes your "means".

Steps describe specific projects and tasks required to navigate that path - your "who", "what", "when", "where", "why", and "how".

Write these - so that whomever reads it may run with it.

Love,

Daddy

"LEarning (Writing Your First Business Plan (WYFBP))"
By Derrick Brown
8-10-2017

Many years ago, I developed a six-week class called "Writing Your First Business Plan".

The purpose of the class was to help entrepreneurs with GOoD ideas (good ideas from God) "wrap their minds" around their vision, mission, and steps - in a way that established and built positive momentum.

Vision describes what your efforts will produce / create - it describes your "end".

Mission describes the concrete path to your vision - it describes your "means".

Steps describe specific projects and tasks required to navigate that path - your "who", "what", "when", "where", "why", and "how".

I developed the class after reviewing the path I had navigated thus far while implementing my own vision.

My path began with a one-page business plan - written in the Summer of 1993 - that outlined my approach to being a computer consultant.

I was 23 when I wrote it, but even by then I understood that using a computer was my strongest skill set.

Educating and empowering people by learning to use computers efficiently was my strongest interest (my passion).

In 1996, I wrote a more formal business plan that helped launch an African-related Internet directory called The Universal Black Pages (UBP).

My current venture, KnowledgeBase, was first UBP's marketing and outreach arm - then we went "solo" in 1998.

All of this was defined and outlined in that formal plan - which received a lot of positive feedback, and allowed us to run our business "on paper".

This helped us avoid a lot of costly mistakes (I mean financial ones).

We still made more than our fair share (especially management & leadership ones), and earned some painful wisdom through lessons learned.

Through it all, though, I remembered that one-page plan, and the confidence, clarity, and calm it brought when I finished it.

I wanted to outline a process that would help others achieve that same confidence, clarity, and calm.

Then I wanted to walk through that process with them.

Let me show it to you ...

I led 250 people through this process from 2001 to 2002 in multiple 6-week sessions that I recorded on my laptop.

These recordings prepared me for podcasting before I even knew what podcasting was.

Listening to them also helped me grow as a man.

There is nothing more humbling than listening to yourself teach others while realizing how much you have left to LEarn.

Suffice it to say that I am still LEarning, still teaching, and still have a long way to go.

But I am confident that I know how to get there.

And I am faithful that I will.

Selah.

Dear Hannah: LEarning - Reach - Then Teach (Small-Group "Discipling" Fellowship)

Dear Hannah,

I help people who help people.

Then we help people to help people.

I do this by creating and nurturing a "discipling" fellowship that uses mentoring, mediation, and problem solving to promote personal growth.

"LEarning (Reach - Then Teach (Small-Group "Discipling" Fellowship))"
By Derrick Brown
8-4-2017

I host a six-week class called "Reach - Then Teach".

The class goal is to help parents, mentors and teachers build stronger relationships with students.

Part of my role is to introduce 6 key projects (one per class) that I use to both facilitate and actively participate in relationships.

The larger part of my mission, though, is to create and nurture a small-group, "discipling" fellowship.

A "discipling" fellowship is one where participants equip each other to equip others.

This is a closer walk between me and thee.

This might be a tad bit cozier than a normal classroom setting.

See - once I lead you through these projects, I will also have been transparent about "me" - my life and times.

You will have been introduced to my life's passion, purpose, and mission.

If all goes well, the *end* of our class will mark the *beginning* of our fellowship.

I said all this once, but please hear me twice.

You may now be wondering ... "Derrick - exactly who should participate in this class?"

Work with me, now, to get us all on the same page ... and in the same book.

Most of us are - or will one day be - parents and / or mentors.

Some of us have been teachers.

All of us, though, have been - and will be - students.

So - if you are a parent and / or mentor who is still learning on the job, please join us.

If you understand that - regardless of your profession, affiliation, religion, opinion, position, or persuasion - that ...

1. There is much left for you to learn in this life.
2. To teach is to learn twice - even as the teacher, you are still the student.

... then please join us.

As I close, I hope that I have illuminated our path, and have generated momentum to start our journey.

All I need now is you!

Grace and peace y'all, and thank you for listening.

I hope to see you real soon.

Class Summary

Effective parents, mentors and teachers use discernment and self-awareness to *reach* students, which then allows them to effectively *teach* students.

This class will demonstrate concrete strategies that help parents, mentors and teachers build stronger relationships with students that use simple, inexpensive, engaging "gameshows" and projects.

Language (how we use words, numbers and sounds to communicate) and discourse (verbal expression in speech and writing) are more important than vocabulary (knowledge of words).

Similarly, numeracy (being able to communicate using numbers (and number sentences)) is more important that rote (repetitious) memorization of calculations.

Talk To Me is a game show (in the tradition of Taboo and Pictionary) that helps teams of contestants to build language, discourse, and numeracy skills by providing correct answers formed from number sentence clues presented by a single teammate.

For example, a clue giver who sees the number 80 – and the operator ‘X’ (multiplication) – on their card (or screen) can say (or write) “20 times 4”.

If their teammates respond “80” – then their team scores a point!

Teams take turns giving and guessing clues for 1-2 minutes per round. The game host and commissioner decide the actual length of each round, as well as the number of rounds per game. At the end of the game, the team that provides the most correct answers wins!

SESSION 2: BAG OF LIFE

Bag Of Life is a small-group relationship building activity that uses randomly drawn cards containing fill-in-the-blank sentences, questions, and words that encourage transparent self-expression.

SESSION 3: CONVERSE

CONVERSE is a difficult (moderated) conversation (powered by THE BAG OF LIFE (SEE SESSION 2)) that takes place between two rational humans with differing perspectives. The underlying principle is that civil discourse - especially between dissenters - promotes growth.

SESSION 4: NINE MEN'S MORRIS TOURNAMENT

Nine Men's Morris is an ancient board game combining the speed of checkers, the strategy of chess and the simplicity of tic-tac-toe in ways that younger and older people can enjoy – together in an inexpensive two-hour tournament format!

SESSION 5: NOW YOU KNOW (History Quiz Bowl)

NOW YOU KNOW is a gameshow played (using a Powerpoint template) in the tradition of "Jeopardy" that presents the exploits of extraordinary people in an inspiring, "edutaining" way.

The History Quiz Bowl (Volume 1) presents 26 (5 per category, plus 1 in the final round) inspiring people in a fun, interactive, easy-to-play format that includes these categories:

EDUCATION
FILM, TV, THEATER
FREEDOM FIGHTERS
SISTAH SOULJAHS
SPORTS

SESSION 6: PROJECT PROSE: WRITING YOUR FIRST BUSINESS PLAN (WYFBP)

WYFBP is a seven-assignment writing project that helps aspiring entrepreneurs understand their vision, and the missions that will manifest it.

SESSION 7: The People In My Neighborhood (TPIMN)

TPIMN is a “map app” (powered by Google) that locates nearby churches, schools, and subdivisions. We will study map locations using a "scavenger hunt" approach to learn more about our neighbors.

SESSION 8: RHYME-IN-TIME

Rhyme-In-Time is powered by a large list of word groups - 2 or more words per group - that rhyme in special ways.

Some are what I call "double rhymes".

These words rhyme phonetically (they end in similar sounds), but they also rhyme thematically (they relate as concepts).

For example, "nameless" and "shameless" comes to mind.

"Ruthless", "couthless", and "toothless" also comes to mind.

Some of the words are "homophones" - they sound the same, but are spelled differently, and have different meanings that can still be easily connected.

For example, "so", "sew", and "sow".

I use Rhyme-In-Time to craft and refine song lyrics.
