Storybox Elements
Standup Storytelling
uses “story time” (primarily for student audiences of ages 4-10) to build
relationships via acceptance, affirmation, accountability, and empathy.
It builds literacy, numeracy, language, and critical
thinking skills via imagination and creative problem solving using a recurring
set of characters, themes and combinable techniques like …
a.StoryBox /
StoryBag (stories created “on the fly” using prompts from small objects (like
numeric / letter / picture dice, or board game pieces) selected from a box /
bag)
b.Fill-In-The-Blank
(tell stories that encourage audience participation by providing “blanks”
that they “fill in” ... use the “blanks” to let them decide what happens next!)
c.Rhyme-In-Time
(a special version of
Fill-In-The-Blank where each “blank” is filled with a alliterative word
beginning with the “letter of the day”, or with a word that rhymes with a
recent story word)
d.Affirmations
(stories that offer personal encouragement to the audience)
e.On This
Day (re-enactment of the current / previous day using the characters Super Hannah & Shaka, and / or Mr. Bunny)
f.Slide Show
(stories - based on current and recent events (like field trips) – powered by
cellphone photos)
g.The
Adventures of SuperHannah (SuperHannah – assisted by her trusted sidekick
Shaka - uses her “special powers” of mentoring, mediation, creative problem
solving and empathy to redirect “villains” to become positive contributors to
society)
My wife (your mother) and I are learning how to live at this level ...

"LEarning (BIG Love)" By Derrick and Keisha Brown 1-21-2019
"(I Have Learned To Respect) The Power Of Love".
NOT ...
(
That "Always & Forever" love.
That "Float On" love.
That "Outstanding" love.
That "Yearning For Your Love" love.
That "Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday" love.
That "Computer" love.
That "For The Love Of You" love.
That "Cry Together" love.
That "You Don't Have To Cry" love.
That "Break Up To Make Up" love.
That "Holding On (Is Very Hard To Do) When Love Is Gone" love.
That "Every Time I Turn Around (I'm Back In Love Again)" love.
)
Nah ... I'm talking 'bout that "We Both Deserve Each Other's Love" love.
That "Love Ballad" love - feel me?
When I married Keisha, and - still to this very day - I envisioned marriage as the ultimate friendship ...
… a long conversation based on ... … honesty, ... … disclosure, ... … forgiveness, ... … and dependability. It allows two to cover each other As they become whole through God’s perfecting process ... Of healing our hurts ... Taking off our masks ... Staying in the driver’s seat ... And trusting Him ... So that we all walk in the ... Patience, ... Kindness, ... Selflessness, ... Truth, ... Humility, ... Faith, ... And hope, ... Called love.
My wife and I are learning how to live at this level.
Building this kind of friendship takes a commitment and work ethic that goes far beyond backpatting and cliche's.
See ...
realizing love's vision needs some revision lots of relationship a l'il less religion
a lot of decision a little precision couple of setbacks head-on collision
peace takes time heal that incision be reconciled don't multiply division
get that new addition via subtraction of all distraction and inaction
put together fractions put down factions overreactions dissatisfactions
And the two shall become one ...
Now, that's a tough one ...
we are both independent growing to be interdependent without becoming codependent
SING "And what we have is much more than they can see". (4X)
learning to pray for each other's dreams
then to rise and help make those dreams a reality
... and for God to change my heart (not my wife's)
... to speak each other's love language but also to use a vernacular of kindness, care, concern, and respect
one that does away with talk like ...
"I'm just kidding", "I'm just joking", and "I'm just playing"
'cause "just" is a microaggressive term of self-justification that injects a slow-acting poison into our fellowship
we want our home to be a refuge of peace and support
to do for each other even when we don't feel like it
to listen to each other for acceptance, affirmation, and understanding
to apologize even when we were "right"
and to realize that ain't nobody ever really "right" ... unless we are both "alright"
to be content in knowing that she loves Jesus and me
to share our hearts - I am talking about our minds, wills, and emotions - with an even tone
to never break up and to always make up
the road is long with twists & turns, hills and valleys
this leaves lots of time for mistakes, reflection, dissection and correction
provision, protection, decision, and connection
taking that journey together will lead you to higher, deeper, sweeter love
I call that "BIG Love"
The song in the background ("Love Ballad" by LTD featuring Jeffrey Osborne) has been one of my favorite "slow jams" since I was 6 years old.
My daddy was a DJ, so - yes - I knew more than I should have about "slow jams".
I discovered the song again this year - for the first time.
I put it on the playlist I use for inspiration when I am working in the studio getting ready to write and record.
I heard it - and watched the video - on YouTube while wearing my monitor headphones ... the ones that let you hear everything in a song.
I was astonished at how calm, cool, and careful Jeffrey Osborne was with this whole song.
It made his delivery that much more powerful.
But then the end (where he is singing the hook and improvising in the background) took everything to another level.
That man was testifying like he had found something higher, deeper, and sweeter than being "all up in his feelings".
I never heard that song in that way until recently, and I guess it is because I had to get to where he was to really feel him.
Well, I am there now.
I love you, baby - and I am forever thankful to you for loving me - in a "BIG" way.
Sometimes
things happen that upset us. We have to feel what we feel, take the
time to heal, remember what is real, and keep moving forward ...
As I lay me down to sleep
I kiss my wife and ponder deep
I wonder why, and that's OK
Answers tomorrow are questions today
Then I kneel and start to pray
Ask the Lord to have His way
Stay focused on a future day
Hope to keep all harm at bay
So my baby girl can play
Jump on me, yell "Daddy, yay!"
Master piano, dance ballet
Tell her about our wedding day
How to wait for her fiance'
Relationships begin with "hey"
Then take their course - la vie c'est
Do her work for more than pay
Know when to go, and when to stay
Correct her course if she should stray
See that this world is still cray cray
The brave are scared to disobey
But sometimes do it anyway
The fools rush in, the wise survey
Think twice, act once - avoid the fray
Accountable talk never starts with "they"
Power is more than being able to sway
Then I reach "amen" and rise again
Ready to embark, engage and win
Eyes wide shut, but with open heart
The game ain't fair, so play it smart
The road ahead is still paved with LIFE
Despite all circumstance and strife
She can change the world if I maintain
Stay on my grind, and in my lane
Love,
Daddy

About Derrick Brown(Standup Storyteller)
I am Keisha's husband, and Hannah's father.
I am a “standup storyteller.”
I
fuse rap, spoken word (poetry), oration (traditional public speaking),
singing, and teaching into messages of hope, healing, and change that I
write, direct, and produce to help people who help people.
Everything must change - and stay changED.
Tradition begins and ends with change.
Change
begins with me and the renewing of my mind ... then continues through
efforts to effect small-group discipleship (equipping others to equip
others) with audiences that respect and embrace mentoring, mediation,
and problem solving as tools of change.
I am the product of my mentoring relationships, peacemaking (and peacekeeping), and problem-solving ability.
My education began when I finished school.
After
school, I enrolled in a lifelong curriculum that includes classes in
ministry, entrepreneurship, stewardship, literacy, numeracy, language,
self-identity, self-expression, and analysis / synthesis.
My projects execute a ministry that has evolved from wisdom earned through lessons learned.
I want to share this wisdom to build teams of "triple threat" fellows - mentors, mediators, and problem solvers.
We will collaborate in simple, powerful ways that allow us to help people who help people.
I
now know that power is work done efficiently (with wise and skillful
use of resources, interests, communication, and expertise).
